Milly Sawyers, an enslaved woman, sought and won her freedom in the newly established courthouse in Springfield, Missouri.

Today, The Milly Sawyers Center brings people together to learn about the collective history of our region and to celebrate the variety of cultures that make up our community.

Our Approach

Experiential Education
We immerse community members in the cultural heritage of our region.
Facilitated Dialogue
We encourage strategic dialogue and conversations that develop a more just, whole, and resilient society.
Intercultural Development
We recognize and celebrate our community’s varied belief-systems and worldviews.
Grassroots Advocacy
We connect community members with advocacy efforts shaping policy and social change.

About Us

We’re educators, nonprofit leaders, advocates, and historians envisioning a community built on a foundation of mutually beneficial understanding, awareness, and collaboration across all cultural groups.

We believe that together, we can raise our region’s collective cultural consciousness to become a stronger, more vibrant, and more caring community.
